The vineyards of Cyprus are among the very few vineyards of the world that were not affected by the vine louse, known as phylloxera, a disease that fell upon the greatest part of Europe’s vineyards at the beginning of the twentieth century, destroying them almost completely.

Xynisteri is an indigenous white grape grown on Cyprus where it was first mentioned as Xinisteri in 1881
A French ampelographer Dr. Mouliefers refers to it in 1893 .
According to some estimates, 33% of Cypriot vineyards,on the south slopes of the Troodos mountain range are planted with this grape variety, a fact that makes Xynisteri the main white grape grown of Cyprus.
Its clusters and berries are of medium size while it is known for its durability against wine diseases.
It produces excellent light-coloured white wines, lite in body ,beautiful citrus character with low alcohol levels and acidity .
Xynisteri to be labeled as appellation of origin wine ,has to be no less than 85% Xynisteri with ABV no less that 11% vol.
