"Uncut Gem" Mavro Mouklos,Tsiakkas Winery

"Don't make the mistake of looking at an uncut gem, this part is always a gamble. Kostas Ntanos , Orestis Tsiakkas and Ektoras Tsiakkas took a different approach to "build" a wine made by Mavro grape variety ,creating a great wine,representing their terroir, their soil, their vineyard and Cyprus."







Tsiakkas winery was established in 1988 just outside Pelendri village on the Troodos Mountains, in the Pitsilia wine region.

In the late 90s, more and more international varieties were used to make the wines of the winery.

These varieties included Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet, Merlot and Grenache. Although some of them are still used by the winery, in the recent years, there is a shift towards Cypriot varieties like Yiannoudi (Red),Vamvakada (Red),Mavro (Red), Promara (White), Xynisteri (White).

All vineyards are certified organic, since 1995.



The winery has won many international awards for its wines with the latest being a Regional Trophy from Decanter wine competition, in London, scores of 91 and 94 by Robert Parker, Best wine of the show in the US, Gold cup in Moscow, Gold awards in international and local wine competitions, and best spirit of the show for two consecutive years for our zivania. Tsiakkas Commandaria was also on the list of the 100 best wines according to VINUM magazine in Switzerland, among 6000 wines from all over the world.

Nose Medium plus aromatic intensity, aromas of cherries, cranberries, sweet strawberries with a sprinkling of allspice which evolves in to dark cherry chocolate sense with aeration.


Palate Dry,lite , soft and gentle, elegant tannins with a fruity character which, thanks to acidity, keep for a long time.


FOOD PAIRING

The concept of food and wine pairing came under the spotlight.

Mouklos was put in to test with a fusion dish of Iberico pork and sushi at Mfusion restaurant FOURSEASONS and it was a rewarding challenge.

Mouklos stand up to bold flavors found in sushi without overpowering the delicate fish flavors, Mouklos pair Iberico ham equally well.
